The International Rose of Tralee festival is a yearly celebration of irish heritage
A bit of history
The Rose of Tralee International Festival as we know it today stems from Tralee’s annual carnival queen Festival.
In 1959 a group of local business people decided to revamp the carnival to encourage tourism to a town suffering post-war emigration. The new event would be called a Festival and the Carnival Queen contest turned into a celebration of the Rose of Tralee song with particular attention paid to the words “It was not her beauty alone that one me but was the truth in her eyes ever dawning that made me love Mary The Rose of Tralee’.
Today:
Some of the qualities the judges look for are personality, charisma, confidence, great communication skills and dress sense. Entrants also just need to be themselves, be relaxed and enjoy the experience.
This competition gives young West Australian women an opportunity to enjoy and celebrate their cultural connection and the fact they are proud of their heritage and being Irish.
The Rose of Tralee is televised with RTE in several countries. (Ireland, England, Canada, America, and others – also broadcast live on the net)
Perth has been involved in The Rose of Tralee International Festival for 24 years and has had two international – winners Naomi Horgan in 1995 and Lisa Manning in 2001.
